Freshly Oven Baked Artist's Statement
My work consists of large-scale oil paintings showing modern locales and persons depicted in a realistic style. These works contain my friends interacting with each other in unusual and somewhat cryptic activities. With these paintings I hope to explore the psychological playing field of the human animal in a modern setting. Some works in Freshly Oven Baked take place in a suburban setting while others occur around fast food restaurants, malls and supermarkets.
Also examined are our symbiotic relationships between North American objects and places and our ever-growing dependence on them to sustain our standard of living. We depend greatly on our 20th century ‘world of wonders’ but we seldom take time to contemplate it. We live in a realm of cars, drive-thrus, television and mass media. I would like to shine a light on that world we often regard as invisible.
I also try to make paintings with a sense of the mystical. By placing people into strange scenarios and contemporary settings I try to create images of modern ritual. I hope to provide the viewer with a perspective in which the everyday is elevated and common events are of sublime importance.
Another important element in my works is the people themselves. Without the figures the entire drama would be lost. Only the unpredictable nature of the human mind can lend the elements needed for myth and mystery.
Lastly, it is important to know that my paintings have no clear-cut messages. I try to create images that can be interpreted in an infinite number of ways. The viewer is the final piece added to complete the puzzles found in what I do.
